Law & Order SVU “Hunting Ground” Recap & Review

All Photos by NBCUniversal

Warren Leight et al. pulled out another thriller of an episode in “Hunting Ground.” It was a “ripped from the headlines” story reminiscent of the real life Long Island serial killings. The episode opened with a little romance between Benson and EADA Haden. The glow of the weekend ends quickly with the case of a missing girl which evolves rapidly into something much bigger. Benson and Haden’s relationship gets tested when Benson tries to enlist Haden’s support to identify the girl’s abductor by going after a local newspaper and their advertisers. Sadly, it takes a lot more bodies for Haden to see the light. But, did Haden have the press conference to call out the escort services and newspapers out of outrage over the number of victims and the way the newspapers were facilitating prostitution, or did he do it for political motives as it was a high profile case? I would like to think that Benson had something to do with his change of heart, but something in the back of my mind makes me worry that he is not what he seems. (I guess I have trust issues.)

Television has seen its share of serial killer stories over the years, to the point that I think it’s overdone. Still, this episode gave more than a creepy killer, bodies, and detectives working the case;  we got to see a little more about how their personal lives can be affected by working these horrific cases.

Was it right for the police and Amaro to leave Benson alone with the victim while they searched the surrounding area for the killer? How did the killer get back into the building without all those police nearby,  searching the immediate area? Had they simply left someone stationed at or inside the door while Benson stayed with the victim, she would have likely not been placed in harm’s way.

Benson and Haden leave a movie theatre and when Haden puts his arm around her, she asks what he is doing. He tells her not to worry, nobody they work with could sit through two hours of black and white with no talking. Benson says she is a little confused by the rules. Haden replies that officially, if this works, they just need to disclose their involvement. Benson asks if “disclose” means to send out a memo. He says yes, one to her boss and one to his. Benson comments she doesn’t know if she is ready for that, and Haden tells her to take some time and back off to take some of the pressure off. She thinks that’s good. He says there is a great bistro down the street and asks if she want to get something to eat, but she counters with an invite to her place for some takeout. He says he likes it...a lot.

As they walk off, a man with his dog standing nearby pulls a newspaper out of a nearby vending box. Later, in his car, he is looking at ads and is on the phone, telling the person on the other end there will be no credit cards, his wife looks at the statements, and he will give cash up front. He tells them to have her wait for him at 14th and 7th, adding “Starbucks, 9PM.”

Elsewhere, a young woman, Haley, who is holding a baby, is on the phone and says “9 PM” and that she can do it. She tells the caller to let her get dressed.    When she hangs up the phone her mother walks in and is surprised she is going out, but Haley says she can’t turn down catering stuff, they will start calling other people. Her mother asks who has dinner this late? Haley says rich people, and her mother says that is good, maybe she will meet someone.

Later, at dinner with the man we saw earlier – Haley calls him Brewster – she seems perplexed that he wanted to take her to dinner, saying most men want the experience in bed. He says that the chase is half the fun, and encourages her to get a steak as a woman needs meat on her bones to survive these winters, She says she likes to stay inside, but he likes to be out, walking the beach. The waiter asks “Brewster” if he is done, and he instructs him to wrap up his leftovers for his dog.

Later, he opens the car door and his dog Orion is in there and she hesitates. He tells her that the dog does not bite but Haley says she usually does not get in cars. He asks if she is scared but she asks if the dog has been in there the whole time. He says the dog likes it. She gets in.

Back at Benson’s apartment Benson and Haden are looking over carry out menus and Benson asks if he sees anything he likes. He says yes, and moves in to kiss her. She pauses and asks if that is what he meant by taking is slow and taking the pressure off. He asks her what is wrong and she says nothing. He tells her he understands that this is really hard for her, but whatever it is, he can handle it. He’s not going anywhere, okay? She says okay. He replies, “so come here” and she smiles and kisses him.

Later, “Brewster” is driving in his car with the dog in the front seat, and Haley is in the back seat behind a wire screen, and she tells him please, she will do anything, he doesn’t have to pay her, and she doesn’t want to die. He comments that is up to her, isn’t it? She sobs.

The next morning, Benson and Haden are in bed together, asleep, and they are awakened by a phone call from Cragen. She shuts off the phone and lays back down. He says he guesses the weekend has to end sometime.

Law & Order SVU “Home Invasions” Recap & Review

All photos by NBCUniversal

Law & Order SVU has pulled out another fantastic episode with “Home Invasions.” In the process of telling a story of a home invasion with apparent hate crime overtones, the episode revealed a back story for Detective Amanda Rollins,  exposing her own troubles which quickly invaded her job. It’s not the first time in the Law & Order Universe that a detective’s gambling problem was exposed; Ed Greene (Jesse L. Martin, Law & Order) from the 2-7 had his gambling problem come out in a case that ultimately ended his career. In “Home Invasions”, Captain Cragen, while not pleased with Rollins’ revelation, is there to support her in getting her life – and her career - back on track. This story line finally brings some much needed dimension to Rollins.

I am not quite sure why, but I suspected almost from the onset of the episode that Emmy was going to be involved in the home invasion and murder of her parents.  Still, the writers did a great job of weaving in all the pieces and ultimately exposing Emmy’s secret and what lengths her friends would do to protect her. The writing has dramatically improved this season; it is clear that there is much thought being given to creating scenarios and dialog that utilizes the best of the regular cast. (Munch was MIA again, but at least we got a good dose of Cragen.)

I know I've ask this before and I will ask it again - does anyone in New York actually look to see who is at their door before they open it? I can only wonder as to how many deaths in the fictional Law & Order world would have been avoided if people would just look before opening...

Here is the recap

Cast:
Mariska Hargitay – Detective Olivia Benson
Ice-T – Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
Richard Belzer – Sergeant John Munch
Dann Florek – Captain Don Cragen
Kelli Giddish - Detective Amanda Rollins
Danny Pino - Detective Nick Amaro

Guest stars:
Esai Morales – Jimmy Vasquez
Jake T. Austin - Rob Fisher
Tommy Flanagan - Murphy
Elizabeth Rodriguez _ Carmen Vasquez
Lauren Kelly – Emmy Eckhouse
Danny Mastrogiorgio – Rob’s father
Delaney Williams – Murphy’s lawyer
Alan Davidson - McCort
Isiah Whitlock. Jr. – police captain
Cady Huffman – Joan’s work partner
Betsy Aidem – Doctor
Alex Manette – Sidney Eckhouse
Eric Kappenberg – Anthony Parker
Dawn Evans – Joan Eckhouse
Miriam Morales – CSU Tech

While the Eckhouse family watches a basketball game, Sidney Eckhouse makes his daughter sit and watch the game and orders his wife Joan to answer the door. They think it is their Chinese food being delivered, but Joan opens the door and find a masked gunman, who shoots her twice and then enters the house.

At SVU, Captain Cragen tells Detectives Amaro and Rollins to hold off on leaving for their dinner break, they got a shooting in Yorkville with two fatalities confirmed. When Rollins questions why it is for SVU, Cragen tells her the shooting took place at the home of Joan Eckhouse, Chief Counsel for the New York Gay Right Coalition, and he will have Benson and Fin meet them there.

Detective Benson arrives on the scene and sees CSU at work. She comments on the messy crime scene and asks what happened. Amaro explains the a delivery guy found them, there was no sign of forced entry or sign of robbery. The intruder walked past the wife, Joan,  and kills her and before they can react, he moved to the husband, Sidney, and their daughter on the couch. The daughter, Emmy, 14, is in surgery at St. Michaels’ with a bullet in her head. The CSU Tech shows them a bullet in the wall that she found, and they are looking for the others. She tells them it is a mess and good luck in reconstructing what went down. Benson sees the bullet has a full metal jacket, and Amaro says it is from a Winchester 357 sig. The  word  “Queer” is sprayed all over the walls, and Benson says she has seen her share of hate crimes, but the execution of a whole family is extreme.

Outside, a man races up to Fin and Rollins and asks if everyone is OK. He says he is Rob Fisher, and he is there with his father who introduces himself. Rollins says Emmy is at the hospital, and then Rob asks if dad if he is happy now, it is all his fault.

Later, Rob tells Benson and Amaro that Emmy was supposed to come over but his dad made him cancel, adding that if she had not been grounded she would not have been shot. She comes over all the time and his father thought she was distracting him. They have been together 8 months. He told his father they were not sleeping together and he even got Emmy to take the abstinence pledge, but his father could not let it go.

Fin and Rollins speak with Rob’s father about the Eckhouses. He knew Sidney better, Joan was always working, calling her a real crusader. He and Sidney were on the same page regarding Emmy; they are kids and it was too intense. They had curfews and ground rules emailed, adding it is all part of being a dad. He had to lock him in when he had to go out and walk the dog. He said there was a squad car parked outside the Eckhouse residence about a month ago for at least an hour. He didn’t ask Sidney about it, saying it was not his business.

Law & Order SVU “Father’s Shadow” Recap & Review

Law & Order SVU “Father’s Shadow” was an excellent episode that was firing on all cylinders -  great acting and a solid story written exceptionally well. It also opened different than the traditional episodes by starting 5 days ahead of the lead story. While this is a technique that is overused in other television shows, I am hard pressed to think of an episode in the entire Law & Order universe that has started this way. It helped to set the tone for this very dramatic and unsettling episode.

The case first began as a story about the stereotypical casting couch, but soon twisted into a hostage situation. Interspersed within the story was a glimpse into the progression of Benson’s relationship with EADA Haden. The writers are doing a fine job in giving Benson’s personal life a little exposure without it feeling forced. A question, though: Benson was reluctant to go to dinner at a bistro with Haden - citing it as a possible conflict of interest – but didn’t she have dinner alone with him in the previous episode? Did the conflict have to do with the fact that his apartment was close by and that there was a presumption that this is where he planned the evening to end? Based on what we know of upcoming episodes, Benson clearly doesn’t hold on to the conflict of interest excuse for long.

It was obvious that Amaro’s tactic of saying he heard someone call for help in the casting office was not going to fly. I was surprised that he even tried it. But at least it gave an excuse to bring in Michael Cutter, even if it was for short scenes.

“Father’s Shadow” is one of the best episodes of the season, and a wonderful feature for Mariska. She really delivered the drama.

Here is the recap:

Cast
Mariska Hargitay – Detective Olivia Benson
Ice-T – Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
Richard Belzer – Sergeant John Munch
Dann Florek – Captain Don Cragen
Kelli Giddish - Detective Amanda Rollins
Danny Pino - Detective Nick Amaro

Guest stars:
Linus Roache - Bureau Chief Michael Cutter
Harry Connick, Jr. - Executive A.D.A. David Haden
Miranda Lambert - Lacey Ford
Michael McKean – Burt Sandow
Robert Klein – Dwight Stannich
Cameron Monaghan- Eddie Sandow
Kelly Karbacz - Jess
Emma Rayne Lyle - Lily Whitley
David Warshofsky – Chief Duggan
Chris Butler – Sergeant Mullin
Michael Mastro – Judge Serani
Ilene Kristen – Eddie’s mother
Karen Tsen Lee – Medical Examiner
Charlotte Graham – Mallory Jenner
Robin DeJesus – Jose Silva
Katie Flahive – Alicia Sandow

Detectives Benson and Amaro, along with Captain Cragen, arrive at a scene where police and a hostage negotiating team are present. Chief Duggan introduces Sergeant Mullin from HNT who tells Benson the gunman asked for her.

Five days earlier, Benson is giving a lecture, speaking about drug facilitated sexual assault, and she sees EADA David Haden arrive.

Elsewhere, Jess introduces Mallory Jenner to Mr. Sandow, announcing it is his 5:00 audition. He laughs when Mallory shakes his hand, and then explains she is competing for a leading role in a Broadway musical and the audience needs to see her passion. She then gives him a huge hug, all while being recorded on video by Eddie.

Back at the lecture, Benson tells the audience that with awareness comes action, and then leaves the stage to much applause.  Haden walks up to greet her, saying it was a terrific speech, adding that it was engaging and funny, considering the topic. Benson says she would rather be locked in a box with a perp. As the moderator begins to announce Haden, Benson wisecracks to him that they will let anyone speak here. He asks if she is staying, adding it is about international sex trafficking, and he cut the speech down to three hours.

Back at the audition, Mallory Jenner says this would be her dream come true. Sandow tells her to go again, and to show him she will do whatever it takes to get this part. He looks at this watch and then tells Jess that they are running late and to go home to Lily, and she leaves. Mallory continues with the audition, and then Sandow tells Eddie he will try a couple without the camera, so Eddie exits the room. Sandow reaches for a large crystal trophy and hands it to Mallory, saying it is his Documentas award which he won in 1992 for a documentary, “Hard Labor”. He takes the glass of champagne out of her hand and tells her to seduce the audience and to let them know she wants this. As he says “action” things start to look fuzzy.

After the lecture, Benson and Haden are leaving together, Haden commenting “Sri Lanka, in a heartbeat.” Benson says she would like to visit Paris someday. He seems surprised that she hasn’t already, adding that is a crime. She says it is something to look forward to. He goes on to say he lives a couple blocks uptown and there is a bistro and he is a regular, usually eating by himself. She asks if he is one of those guys. As they walk out the door, Haden comments about a Stanley Elkin quote, “The peculiar dignity of men seen eating alone...” and then proceeds to ask her to dinner. She smiles and says she is actually still on duty, adding she is a cop and he is the DA, asking isn't that a conflict of interest waiting to happen? He says she is right, he gets it. As he walks off, he tells her not to wait too long to see Paris.
